I liked the short chapters and the underlying story about mental health but parts of it were a bit strange. She moved away from the small Alaskan town that was home and left behind her best friend. Like just how many of these books can one read with over the top exaggerated portrayals of mentally ill people, and like extra points for entangling the persons mental illness with some mysticism. The pacing remains even until the critical plot disruption, resulting in the rest of the story feeling disjointed and rushed. What’s missing is a connection between the two girls’ complicated friendship and the archetypal horror narrative that fuels the tale’s compulsive readability.
