Pissing Match: Perfs in Volatile Drama Demonstrates How Violence is Trumped by Violence Considine may have made his name as an actor of rare physical presence in his collaborations with fellow Midlander Shane Meadows (A Room for Romeo Brass, Dead Man’s Shoes), but it’s the restrained assurance he brings to Tyrannosaur that stands out. Peter Mullan. Running time: 1 hour 31 minutes. “Tyrannosaur” starts out with its grimness dial set at nine, and cranks it up from there. Considine never really explores her Christianity in a meaningful, thoughtful way. Amid the Grim Streets, a Pair of Weary Souls. Latest Film Reviews - Tyrannosaur Review latestfilmreviews. As a portrait of a friendship, “Tyrannosaur” finds some sweet and subtle nuances, and Mr. Mullan and Ms. Colman are at their best in their early, hesitant scenes together, as Hannah and Joseph warily step out from behind their defenses. Considine clearly wants to play with the idea that Joseph is a loaded gun waiting to go off and that his rage would be better directed at Hannah’s abusive husband or his neighbor’s abusive boyfriend. Usually a handful of Anglo-Saxon monosyllables convey rage and contempt, taking the place of or clearing the way for grunts and blows. It’s heartbreaking to see Hannah plead with her husband not to beat her, but Considine seems to relish the ugliness of the beating. Previous Next Hide Grid. We believe in Truth & Movies. Or so Joseph discovers when he meets Hannah (Olivia Colman), who runs a charity shop where Joseph comes to hide one afternoon after an altercation. While lead actors Peter Mullan and Olivia Colman deliver strong performances, they’re stuck playing flat characters that are defined by their suffering and almost nothing else. Joseph’s instinct is to lash out – to curse her God, her life and her charity – but he could have saved his breath. It belongs to a tradition of peculiarly dark British dramas produced by successful working-class actors-turned-directors, a tradition exemplified by Gary Oldman’s Nil by Mouth and Mullan’s own NEDS. Its bruising extremity is relieved by flickers of tenderness that can seem as arbitrary as the ambient meanness.
